The Line

I have been considering how January has a way of asking questions. Lately I have been reflecting on how temporary this life is. I miss people who are no longer here, and some days that missing feels louder than usual. I am trying to make sense of it all, the love, the loss, and the unsettling speed of time.

Every minute, someone leaves this world. Intellectually, we know this, but we keep living as if time is somehow negotiable.

January has circled back around. By older adulthood, we begin to realize that we have a limited number of these Januarys left. We are standing in the line of days we still get to spend.

We are all in line, whether we admit it or not. At least we are not alone in line. What a blessing that is. And, to those of you standing near me in my line, thank you for your presence and your support, and your loving pressure to make me live a life of meaning. You know who you are.

We don’t know how close we are to the end of the line and we don’t know when our turn comes. We also do not get to take a pass, opt out, or get in another line. I don’t think I would even if I could.

So, do we just stand here and watch the line shorten? Watch the days pass by? Or can we be inspired to turn this “waiting” into a decision to show up fully while we still can? I believe the answer is not to pass the time, but to make the time.

Make time for what matters. Get clear about what does.

Make your priorities real.

Make the call; connect with someone.

Make the apology; accept the apology.

Make room for joy; find it in every corner of each day.

Make your gifts useful.

Make your love obvious.

Make peace where you can. Fix what you can.

Release what you can’t.

Make your life count. Don’t just stand still in that line. Dance.
